Humans are quite interesting. Most of us believe we know what will make us happy, but once (if at all) we acquire what we previously desired, we find ourselves only longing for more.
Never satisfied, our cravings consume and dictate our lives.
To separate oneself from this cycle of fruitless pursuits, can help one realize a genuine and meaningful path of happiness.
Believe it or not, unless you completely understand the subconscious desert of your mind (few can truthfully say this), your mind is clouded with mirages that you’ve been taught and grown accustomed to in the years you’ve been alive.
Around 3 years ago, I was at the highest peak in my addiction towards disillusions of success and happiness. I was a habitual smoker marijuana, who lusted at the physical sensations of pleasure. Sex, drugs, and food.. mixed together throughout day and night, I viewed as the ambrosia, my ideal experience of happiness.
Within 10 minutes of waking up, I would smoke a “wake’n’bake” bowl to alter my mind in the hazy delirium of ease and rekindle the case of the “fuck its”. I would raid my parent’s kitchen and mindlessly watch tv while stuffing myself until I physically could not eat anymore. I lusted after sex, whether it was with a female or through masturbation, I thought I would be finally happy after a session of physical release.
This lasted for another 2 years. This cloudy, misconception of happiness. I never was truly filled by food. Sex became meaningless. When I focused on the physical aspects of a relationship first, the necessary, deep emotional connection was ignored, thus creating a unstable and frankly, detrimental relationship. Smoking became a normality, a required habit to simply get through the day.
Does this sound familiar at all? Many people believe happiness to be directly linked to money, love, drunken events, past, future, security, painful memories, etc… although my story may be different, have you ever thought what currently makes you happy and unhappy?
Fortunately, I have woken up. Although remnants of this prior mentality remain, I have made some good decisions to encourage progression in a more meaningful path. I still allow myself to enjoy pleasures of life, but I remind myself to not to get attached to them, and not to base my happiness on external influences.
A few will read, even fewer will comprehend.
Here is my summarized intention to write this post:
Take back control of your life. Be interested in how your mind works. Happiness comes from within, not from outside. Smile, breathe and enjoy this present moment :)
