2012: The Year of the Dragon
I am quite indifferent to birthdays. Most people relish the special attention they receive on their day of birth, but I personally disregard it.  I choose to not display my birthday on facebook. I may be shunning the extra attention due to my introverted nature, but I perceive this whole “birthday” phenomenon as odd.
The extra attention we normally receive on our birthdays may just giving an illusion that we’ve naturally progressed compared to the last birthday. Time is not directly correlated to intelligence or maturity. Many people believe this false assumption, but please tell me why I should accept your opinion based solely on your age. A young person can be mature, while an old person can be immature.
Age can be compared to the mileage on a car. Some cars are well maintained while others abused.. but both have the same mileage. Some cars have traveled exotic and exciting roads, while others have only driven the same commute their whole lives. Age is only a measurement of time and nothing else.

I am turning 24 this September. I was born in 1988, making me an Earth Dragon. I have always felt a sense of pride in being a Dragon according to the Chinese zodiac. In my youth, I went as far to believe that special and amazing events would inevitably occur in my life. As I’ve gotten older and experienced more of life, I’ve since realized this is definitely not the case.
I am a normal human being. No physical or mental defects. Raised in a middle class family. Never excelled at anything in my life. I’ve had my past struggles, but nothing extreme to drastically affect my potential. I am in a sense, an average 23 year old American male who happens to be born in the year of the dragon.
There are hundreds of millions of other people who were also born in 1988. Each of them with separate lives and unique situations, with the only thing in common is being an Earth Dragon. Out of all these people, how many of them will reach their potential for greatness? Few, if any at all. Most will be forced to work a job they hate to support a family and mortgage. Their lives will fly past their eyes, one birthday at a time, only to realize that at 40 how much time was wasted.
I don’t celebrate my birthday because I can’t assume that I’ll live another year. By eagerly anticipating that one day of the year, I lose focus on the other 364 equally important days. All that special attention is all for naught for accomplishing more important goals and ambitions.
Please understand that our time alive is limited. Youth will trick us to believe that we have extra time to spare and waste. When we hit 30 or 40, we’ll wonder where the time has gone and why it wasn’t more effectively used. Time is a precious asset, because it’s impossible to recover what was lost.
2012 will be the year I wholeheartedly realize this important fact: Accept that death is inevitable and can happen at any moment. I could also say that many awesome things will happen since it’s “my” year, but in reality, unless I work with determination and effort towards my goals, I might as well believe that I’ll win the lottery or discover a previously unknown superpower.
Until this fact becomes an integral part of my everyday life, I will continue to sleep in, put in half-assed effort into everything I do, and settle with mediocrity. Being a dragon means diddly-squat if I don’t put effort towards my ambitions. Hell, if I wasn’t, I could even lie to be one for all that matters. What matters is how determined I am to accomplish my goals and ambitions with the precious amount of time I have left.
Your house could have a gas explosion in 2 minutes, or the earth destroyed by a meteor while you’re sleeping tonight… so why wait for tomorrow? Waiting will take dreams to the grave, and at the same time… create a shitload of regret until you take your last breath and wonder why you fucking wasted your life.
